| Subject: What does the term "r-value" mean in the context of home insulation? Wed Mar 21, 2018 8:19 pm | |
| It is important to understand, that a material's R-value is determined by giving it an R-value per inch(or other unit of measure), and then the overall R-value is determined by multiplication. This method is undeniably favorable for the fiberglass industry. The "testing methods" for R-value assume some kind of installation amongst other materials that stop convection and radiation, so the only service the insulation provides during the test is conduction resistance. A better test or metric would measure & factor in a material's ability to stop convection, radiation, and conduction, and then be categorized by its ability to either absorb and release water in the form of humidity or vapor drive without damage, or its ability to stop water in the form of liquid, and by this I mean that there should be a clear focus on a building product's breathability when breathability is desired, and it's vapor barrier qualities, when that is what is desired.
